The school district wants to make it easier than ever for families to access nutritional meals this summer.
The Denver Public School Summer Food Service Program provides breakfast and lunch to qualifying kids under the age of 18 at no charge throughout the summer.
Abilene kids going to McKinley Elementary School to eat a free summer lunch are participating in one of the best programs in the nation.
Many food sites are participants in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program, which is administered through state education departments and operated by nonprofits.
"Approximately 20,000 children in the Oakland community depend on free and reduced-cost school meals during the school year", a press release for the program reads. Meals include whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean proteins. "Without volunteers, hot summer days will turn into long, hungry nights for thousands of children".
Rep. Scalise faces additional surgeries; condition still critical
Scalise was shot Wednesday morning when a gunman opened fire at Republicans' congressional baseball practice in Alexandria. For now, Scalise remains in critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.
The location is the Lincoln Elementary School Cafeteria, 98 Lefever St., Gettysburg. "We estimate there's a potential of 17 million meals for children in the summer, with an estimated $33 million in corresponding federal reimbursements". The program runs from June 19 to August 4, Monday through Friday from 11:45 a.m.to 12:45 p.m. Parents should accompany small children.
Through the Summer Feeding Program, the Regional Food Bank is providing free summer meals at 124 sites in 53 central and western Oklahoma counties.
No lunch will be served Monday, July 3, or Tuesday, July 4.
Board members commended Harris for her hard work with the district's food service program, noting that she's set a high standard for the incoming director.
