A resort spokesperson in August said Bookman's win was the "result of an obvious malfunction", noting the Sphinx Slot Machine's highest payout was $6,500.
By November 3, 2016, the Resorts World Casino told the public that instead of Bookman winning $43 million on the penny slot machine, Katrina actually only won $2.25.
However when she tried to claim the prize the staff at the casino informed the woman that the win was void and instead offered her a $2.25 steak on the house which they claimed was the actual prize the machine was supposed to have given out.
The lawsuit, filed at the Queens County Supreme Court, said the Sphinx slot machine's "bells, noises, and lights" as well as the message on the screen told Bookman she had won the jackpot, Courthouse News reported.

Bookman is now suing the casino and her lawyer, Alan Ripka, says she's entitled to the full amount displayed on her machine.
But lawyer Alan Ripka told USA media at the time that the casino had not responded to requests for an explanation about how the slot machine malfunctioned. The attorney said he has queried Resorts World Casino, trying to determine the reasoning behind the slot machine's malfunction, but didn't receive an explanation. The screen said she was a $43 million victor, but the casino said no dice. Does that mean it wasn't inspected?
Which is again to wonder, if it was malfunctioned, what was doing it being put out for the public who played the machine in good faith and who in hindsight never stood a chance of winning, despite the casino happily taking their money. It also posits that Bookman suffered "mental anguish" as a result of the incident and she sustained a "significant" monetary setback because she "lost the chance and/or opportunity to win" on the machine.
As seen in the above photo, a gambler at the Resorts World Casino played a slot machine at the Aqueduct racetrack in the Queens, New York.
