Rickie Fowler leads US Open on day of highs, lows

Rickie Fowler couldn't have asked for a better start.

One day after a blimp crashed and burned next to the golf course and E. coli bacteria was found in the drinking water at a hydration station, the US Open on Friday was marred by a spectator dying at Erin Hills. That was back in 1980 when living legend Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf got off to a shared lead at Baltusrol. Fowler's 65 represents the second-lowest first-round score in tournament history.

Being in such esteemed company, Fowler admits, is flattering, but it's not the end goal.

"I'm ready to be up there (in the final round on Sunday)", Fowler said. Then, he broke through with a PGA Tour victory in March.

Paul Casey, of England, reacts after his birdie on the 11th hole during the second round of the U.S. Open golf tournament Friday, June 16, 2017, at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis. Casey eagled the Par-5, 608-yard first hole and tallied six birdies. After four pars to start the day, he birdied the fifth hole to move into a tie with Fowler. Garcia, who shot a two-under 70, and Brooks Koepka, who shot a five-under 67, have the next best odds on the board at 15/1 and 12/1 respectively.

"I felt the most calm I have in a major in a long time this week", he said. "This was a fun, low round". He'll be flanked by former world No. 1 Jordan Spieth (currently ranked No. 5) and Martin Kaymer.

Holywood's McIlroy finished four under for the final six holes, which helped the four-time major victor post a one-under-par 71 in Wisconsin, but the damage was done in the first round as McIlroy hit six over to effectively end his chances at the second major of the year. The next one went long, he chipped up to 12 feet and took two putts from there. "Yeah, you're going to miss putts, you're not going to make everything so I'm definitely happy with the start". "I missed one fairway, one green and that was the double bogey (on the 12th)". The bad stretch has Johnson tied for 102nd.

That last part - avoiding big numbers - proved to be deadly to Day on Thursday. He said he won't change his approach four days after he and his wife celebrated the birth of their second child. "But when you're visually looking down the fairway, I think when you're trying to aim at a target at a normal golf course, with normal width fairways, there's some pressure into hitting the fairway because it is a lot narrower than we have out here. Obviously, I paid the price for it today". "Those two and Fowler are the three I think have got a great chance of winning".

Johnson wasn't alone in his struggles. He had hit just five of 14 Erin Hills fairways on day one and by the turn yesterday he had matched that figure.

Rickie Fowler was playing so cleanly at Erin Hills that the record appeared to be in jeopardy. The 21-year-old Kim is hoping to claim his first major after winning the coveted Players Championship this season.

Na said he got some support from some of his colleagues. "I'm not saying that this is the week or isn't the week". "I just played some bad golf".

The U.S. Open is known for putting a premium on par, even as the USGA tries to convince golf fans that it's not preoccupied with par. His withdrawal marked the end of a golfing era with the 117th U.S. Open becoming the first major to not include Mickelson and/or Tiger Woods since the 1994 Masters.
