Ronaldo had previously said he was not anxious about tax investigations as he had nothing to hide.

They also alleged that Ronaldo greatly reduced his tax rate by falsely reporting that some of his income came from real estate.

The footballer's club have now responded, writing on their official website: "Cristiano Ronaldo has always shown since his arrival at Real Madrid CF, in July 2009, a clear will to fulfill all his tax obligations".

It added that it is "convinced" that Ronaldo "will demonstrate his complete innocence".

The lawsuit was issued on Tuesday accusing Ronaldo of defrauding tax authorities of €14.7 million. According to the prosecutor office, the Real Madrid player defrauded 1.4 million euros in 2011, 1.7 million euros in 2012, 3.2 million euros in 2013 and 8.5 million euros in 2014. Ronaldo had failed to comply with his tax obligations in a manner that was both "voluntary" and "conscious". But Ronaldo's good vibes likely came to an end this week, after Spanish prosecutors charged the 32-year-old with four counts of tax evasion.

However, a statement from Ronaldo's management company Gestifute insisted the company, Tollin, which was established during Ronaldo's time with Manchester United, has acted in accordance with British and Spanish tax laws.

Ronaldo became a Spanish tax resident in January 2010, and opted to adhere to the Spanish tax regime that applies to foreign born workers in the country in November 2011.
