McIlroy misery after fast start stalls

It was the second straight year McIlroy missed the cut at the U.S. Open.

Rickie Fowler was playing so cleanly at Erin Hills that the record appeared to be in jeopardy. I think the more rounds I can play, I'm hopefully going to get rid of all that stuff and hopefully strip it down to what you saw the last six holes. He missed the 15-footer. But after a blistering 7-under 65 to start the tournament, Fowler posted three straight bogeys on Nos. The next one went long, he chipped up to 12 feet and took two putts from there. "We get to go home today because Daddy played poorly". It was 1 over at Medinah in 1990.

The Globe's most recent sports headlines delivered to your inbox every morning. It didn't matter at that point, because I was so far from the cut line.

Paul Casey was at 7 under after a 71 in the second round.

The leaders are Paul Casey, Brooks Koepka, Brian Harman and Tommy Fleetwood.

Spieth birdied the first hole, and after a pair of pars, he connected on another birdie putt on No. 4 to move to two-under for the day.

Said Johnson, who was 3 over: "I really like this golf course, it sets up well for me". "Yeah, it was a bit of a roller coaster. I guess it's rare you get through a US Open or any major without some kind of a hiccup".

Rory McIlroy and Jason Day never recovered from theirs. And having already won the most recent major in Wisconsin - the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits - he felt an unusual sense of calmness. "I was trying to stay out of the way of Rosey".

US Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates Despite Lower Inflation
The FTSE 100 fell by 0.67% to 7,424 in London while the domestic economy-facing FTSE 250 index slumped 2.0% to 19,568. Inflation was expected to be at 1.7 percent by the end of this year, down from the 1.9 percent previously forecast.

McIlroy took four of them, including a near ace on the finishing par-three ninth, to finish the tournament on five under, which will miss the cut by two or three shots.

Matsuyama came out firing Friday at Erin Hills, with birdies on six of his first eight holes to challenge the tournament's nine-hole scoring record. Johnson came in with 73, but that was not almost enough, as he finished at 4-over 148 when 145 or better was needed to advance. The world's fourth-ranked player birdied six of his first eight holes, shooting 6-under 30 going out. But the former Irish Open victor posted one under for the back nine to get into the clubhouse just inside the cut mark.

Last year's victor and world number one Johnson, who arrived late in Wisconsin after staying in California for the birth of his second child, added a one-over-par 73 to his opening 75 to finish on four-over 148, three off the cut line.

Fellow major champions Danny Willett, Jason Dufner, Jimmy Walker, Angel Cabrera, Graeme McDowell, Bubba Watson, Lucas Glover, Charl Schwartzel, Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson (the defending champ) and Justin Rose also missed the cut.

Willett, who pulled out before the start of his second round, was heading towards the Erin Hills exit anyway after an opening round 81.

So what was the difference between Day 1 and Day 2?

Marc Leishman has maintained his position high on the leaderboard midway through the second round at the US Open. "I thought walking on to the par-3 13th with the front left pin, I thought they could at least give us one tee box up but that's probably too nice to expect out of the USGA, that's a PGA Tour thing to do". Just look at the hole location sheet for the day's play on Friday; nearly all of them are hidden away near the edge of greens.
