Secret Service says they have no Comey tapes

The Secret Service on Monday confirmed that it does not have any recordings of President Donald Trump's conversations. Those explosive allegations have raised questions about whether Trump tried to influence the FBI's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible ties between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

The Secret Service "handled recording systems within the White House for past presidents", according to the Journal.

Trump made major waves last month when he suggested there were tapes of his private conversations with then-FBI Director James Comey before he fired Comey.

When he testified before the Senate last week, Comey said, "Lordy, I hope there are tapes" of the conversations.

The response comes after the Wall Street Journal reported on a May 15th Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request they submitted to the Secret Service.

The companies said they would not have to divest more operations under the proposed DOJ settlement. The European Commission granted approval to the merger in March contingent on the selloffs.

On Friday, after explosive testimony from the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director in Congress repeated the claims that Mr Trump pressured him over Mr Flynn, Mr Trump responded angrily, calling Mr Comey a liar.

On Friday, Trump wouldn't quash rumors about the tapes when he told reporters "I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future", adding, "Oh, you're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry".

That left open the possibility that other White House staff, or Mr Trump himself, could have been involved in recording their talks, if anyone.

The first reporter asked Spicer if the tapes exist and when they may be released.

"The president made clear in the Rose Garden last week that he would have the announcement shortly", Spicer replied.
