North Korean prisoner Otto Warmbier returns to the USA

David Simons was marveling that another country could treat an American like this.

Tillerson said the Department of State was continuing "to have discussions" with North Korea about the release of other three American citizens imprisoned there.

She says it's an "extremely sad" situation that student Otto Warmbier (WORM'-bir) is in a coma.

"We thank you for the opportunity and blessing you've given us to serve your agenda and the American people", said Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who reports suggest may be at risk of losing his job amid internal palace squabbles. He was serving a 15-year prison term with hard labor after he was detained in January 2016 in Pyongyang for what North Korea said were hostile acts against its regime. His family says he's in a coma.

Here's his latest foray into North Korean diplomacy. And how does the Trump administration respond?

"The Department of State continues to have discussions with the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] regarding three other US citizens reported detained", the statement said.

But deplaning in North Korea wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with PotCoin.com made it clear that his earlier "basketball diplomacy" ventures with North Korea have now morphed into what some internet wags described as "weed diplomacy".

The star has visited the North at least four times before, most recently in 2014 when he attracted a deluge of criticism after being filmed singing happy birthday to his "friend for life", leader Kim.

Mr Warmbier's release came during a visit to North Korea by former National Basketball Association star Dennis Rodman.

She also reiterated the State Department's travel advice against going to North Korea, with which the United States has no diplomatic relations.

The arrests have come at a time of heightened tension between North Korea and the United States and its regional neighbours.

At the time of his arrest, Warmbier had been on an organized New Year's tour in North Korea, a five-day stopover on his way to Hong Kong for a study-abroad trip.

Otto Warmbier was sentenced to hard labour for attempting to steal a propaganda sign while on a visit.

While the release of the USA citizen might send a signal about eased tensions between Pyongyang and Washington, the DPRK Monday also expressed nostalgia for a period of relaxed relations with South Korea from 2000 to 2007, by marking the signing of the historic 2000 North-South Joint Declaration on inter-Korean relations.

On the same day that Warmbier left North Korea, another American chose to show up.

North Korea still has at least three Americans in illegal custody, no doubt enduring horrific conditions in violation of all norms of human decency. "This is wrong", David Lee, one of the men who said he studied with Kim, told CNN. "This is him freelancing", the official told Reuters.

Certainly Mr. Trump is aware of Mr. Rodman's visit, but the former athlete's trip doesn't have official backing. He visited Warmbier with two doctors on Monday, and demanded his release on humanitarian grounds. They were immediately taken to Warmbier. Officials said he was to stay until Saturday. "Take care of Otto", Trump is said to have instructed his top diplomat.

In a statement, the family said: "We want the world to know how we and our son have been brutalized and terrorized by the pariah regime".

Warmbier's parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, said they were told he has been in a coma since his trial, when he was last seen in public, and they had learned of this only one week ago. US officials did not confirm those details. North Korean ships also can not fly the flags of other nations to evade sanctions.

Warmbier was to have graduated last month had he not been detained. President Teresa Sullivan said in a statement Tuesday.

They plan to hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Thursday at Wyoming High School.

Sen. Rob Portman confirmed the release but did not comment on Warmbier's health.

North Korea will top the agenda at next week's high-level talks between USA and Chinese officials, he added.
