James Hodgkinson, 66, a resident of Belleville in IL, has been identified as the shooter by federal law enforcement sources, CNN reported.

About 15 to 25 persons were at Simpson Field in Alexandria for the baseball practice when the gunman opened fire, eyewitnesses said.

Mr. Duncan says he was preparing to leave the practice when the man approached him and asked: "Excuse me, sir, who's practicing today?"

Hodgkinson also hung out on a bench in the park by the baseball field, nearby residents said.

"Looking back with 20/20 hindsight, I can see how the guy was troubled, but at the time I thought he was working", Brennwald said.

Officials say Hodgkinson was armed with an M-4 assault rifle and a handgun.

"Trump is a Traitor".

Democrats, in turn, point to Trump's rough language - he has urged on fights at his rallies - as justification for their own. "It's time to destroy Trump & Co", Hodgkinson wrote on his Facebook page on March 22.

Local media also unearthed a 2012 photo of Hodgkinson protesting outside a downtown Belleville post office holding a sign that read, "Tax the Rich".

Those teams are the very best. "We've had two matches away and one at home, and for long periods we've equipped ourselves well". It was a disaster scenario for us to go down to 10 so credit the players because we were up against a nice English team'.

Held nearly every year since 1909, the Congressional Baseball Game - which was slated to take place Thursday night at Nationals Park stadium in Washington - is a well-loved showdown between Senate and House members of both Republican and Democrat camps.

While the motive for the shooting was unknown, Hodgkinson's Facebook page shows him to be a die-hard Bernie Sanders supporter and a former volunteer of his campaign.

"I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign", Sanders said.

Sen. Sanders added, "I am sickened by this despicable act". In addition to his regular presentations, he said, he spoke about the extremist movements that experts had been seeing in the post-Trump election environment. Several prominent news channels mentioned Hodgkinson's "political motivations" repeatedly, yet refused to explain what his politics were, leaving the viewer to fill in the blanks while anchors pontificated vaguely about the sheer madness of political violence - and of course, the need to get rid of all evil guns. In 2006, he was accused of punching a woman and pointing a gun at her boyfriend. The charges were later dismissed. Scalise was said to be in good condition and has already undergone surgery.

"Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover".

"America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this awful shooting", the President said. Social media and campaigns have pitted people against each other, painting them with broad brushes that result in pictures that are caricatures barely resembling real life.

Hodgkinson, 66, was fatally shot by police during the attack.

But prominent Republicans, including Trump's children, have always been unsettled by the rage against the president. After medical personnel arrived, he said he retrieved Scalise's phone and made the first call to Scalise's wife to notify her of the shooting.
