Congressman Steve Scalise, a member of House leadership, was shot and badly wounded, and is now in stable condition at the hospital, along with two very courageous Capitol Police officers.
Channel 3 spoke with the congressman's wife, Brenda, on Wednesday.
The gunman was taken into custody after being wounded in a shootout with Capitol Police, but his motive was not immediately clear.
"Rep. Scalise who I know, Steve Scalise, is a good guy and I'm grateful that he too will have a full recovery, it looks like", said Gov. Bevin. Five people were wounded during the shooting, including Scalise, a House staffer, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods and two Capitol police officers. The hospital says he was shot in the left hip, after which "the bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding".
We also commend the courageous first responders from Alexandria Police, Fire and Rescue who rushed to the scene.
Alexandria police arrived at 7:12 a.m., about three minutes after the first emergency phone call reporting an active shooter.

Senator Ron Johnson posted a video to twitter saying, "The appreciation we owe to the men and women in public safety that they step out of the threshold of their door, they literally put their lives on the line".

Scalise was shot Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia, along with a congressional staffer and members of the Capitol police force.

Joe Barton became visibly emotional talking to reporters about the incident, still dressed in jeans, sneakers and his baseball uniform and standing by his young son, who was also at the practice and still dressed in baseball gear. During its century-long run, the Congressional Baseball Game has evolved into a fundraiser for DC area charities including The Washington Literacy Center, The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, and the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation. People are walking dogs.
