"Now, that I've seen the (suspect's) photo, I've got to believe that he was the guy, " DeSantis said on MSNBC.

Though social media was charged with divisive, partisan rhetoric in the wake of Wednesday's shooting at a Republican baseball practice, most members of Congress responded with messages of unity, hesitant to re-open the contentious gun control debate or politicize the attack.

Rep. Steve Scalise, the number three House Republican, underwent surgery at the facility earlier Wednesday for wounds sustained in a shooting, which took place at a baseball practice just outside Washington on Wednesday morning. Another lawmaker and police officer also received minor "secondary" injuries, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said at a Wednesday evening news conference.

Flake said two members of Scalise's security detail were wounded, and another man was wounded in the chest.

"We had three members of Congress took shelter in our apartment and they said (the shooting) was down on the field", Benjamin Childers explained during a live stream shortly after the shooting, adding the three were not injured.

The Washington Post, citing law enforcement officials, reported that Hodgkinson owned a home inspection business but had not renewed his inspection license after it expired in November.

Karman and Bill Schaumleffel, neighbors across a small cornfield on the back edge of the Hodgkinson property, recall seeing a man shooting a rifle out into the field about two or three months ago.

A local community organization, the Grenfell Action Group, had warned about fire dangers at the building since 2013. She left with all six of them.

Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting.

After Scalise was hit, said Rep. Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, the congressman "crawled into the outfield, leaving a trail of blood". Those aren't good odds, ' Brooks said.

Hodgkinson contacted the office of Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill., 14 times through email or telephone.

"50 (shots) would be an understatement, I'm quite sure", Flake said when asked about the total amount of gunfire, including police returning fire.

The President is monitoring the situation, the White House said in a statement.

From her vantage point behind a tree, she saw a security officer leave a nearby SUV and attempt to confront the shooter with a handgun. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him". It's unclear which victim is the one MedStar says is in "good condition".
