Mr Scalise's office said he was in stable condition and undergoing surgery.
Network newscasts hastily made plans to originate from Washington, D.C. on Wednesday in response to the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise during a baseball practice in Alexandria, Va. According to President Donald Trump, Hodgkinson died hours late from injuries sustained when Scalise's security team returned fire. The gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson, from IL, was also wounded after trading fire with police.
He was fortunate in that his position seems to have brought the Capitol police to the field in force, and they responded bravely and quickly to what most certainly was a chaotic and frightening situation.
Texas Rep. Roger Williams says a member of his staff was also shot and was receiving medical attention.
Rep. Scott Tipton (R-CO) tweeted about the shooting - "I'm incredibly grateful for the bravery shown by US Capitol police everyday".
Nathan told NBC News he knew the GOP congressional baseball team was being targeted because the squad practices at the field "all the time".
Illinois Representative Adam Kinzinger was not at the baseball practice this morning.

During his confirmation hearing, Sessions testified under oath that he had no meetings with Russian officials during the campaign. In addition, Comey has said Sessions did not respond when he complained that he did not want to be left alone with Trump again.
Brooks also said the shooter shot two officers working protective detail for the Congress members at the event.
During President Trump's statement on the incident, he said, "Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault". He called Scalise a friend, patriot and fighter, and called for unity of the country.
Scalise is the No. 3 House Republican leader.
"I just didn't want her to wake up and learn the news", Flake said. The suspect was apprehended, and the five people wounded were taken to area hospitals. "Our courageous Capitol police perform a challenging job with incredible skill", Trump said.
All votes in the House of Representatives were cancelled for Wednesday.
The shooting occurred one day before the annual Congressional Baseball Game, which is scheduled for June 15 at Nationals Park.
