Those questions were prompted after a friend of President Donald Trump said the White House was considering firing Mueller.
U.S. President Donald Trump took aim Thursday at the report special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the president for obstruction of justice.
News that Mueller is now investigating Trump for obstruction of justice comes amid reports that Trump has discussed whether to remove the special counsel.
It quoted five people briefed on the requests and said those who have agreed to be interviewed are Daniel Coats, the director of national intelligence, Admiral Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, and his recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett.
It is believed that allegations of Trump's obstruction of justice relate to his attempts to encourage Comey to drop an investigation into Mike Flynn, who was forced to resign as Trump's national security adviser earlier this year.
A spokesman for Mueller's team declined to comment on Wednesday.
Comey testified before the Senate intelligence committee last week and confirmed that he gave Mueller the memos he wrote detailing his interactions with Trump ahead of his firing.
In Russia, meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin repeated a denial that Moscow interfered in the USA election - and made mocking remarks about former FBI Director James Comey during a nationally televised call-in show.
Quoting officials, the Post said one event of interest to Mueller - a widely-respected former head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - is an exchange on March 22, when Coats told associates Trump had asked him to intervene with Comey to get him to back off from focusing on Flynn.
Donald Trump 'investigated over possible obstruction of justice' in Russian Federation probe
Throughout the hearing Sessions dodged questions on a panoply of topics using his dubious interpretation of executive privilege . Comey said Sessions did not respond, but Sessions testified that he did respond to the request.
It was not immediately clear whom "they" referred to, but Trump has repeatedly blamed the news media and Democrats for investigations into whether his presidential campaign colluded with Russian Federation to meddle in last year's election. The Post said both men refused the president's request.
Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's legal team, denounced the Post report, saying on Wednesday: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal". The lawyer did not deny the story, however.
Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel called the accusation in the Post unfounded and said it "changes nothing". "Current and former leaders in the intelligence community have repeatedly said there's been no effort to impede the investigation in any way", Ms McDaniel said.
"The continued illegal leaks are the only crime here".
"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story", Trump tweeted.
Updated at 8:32 a.m. | President Donald Trump is contending the Justice Department is examining whether he obstructed justice because investigators were unable to prove his presidential campaign colluded with Russian Federation.
