"But we have issued travel warnings to Americans and suggested they not travel to North Korea for their own safety", he said.

Asked by Business Insider whether the U.S. may have coordinated with Rodman over the visit and release of Warmbier, Frank Aum, a former senior adviser on North Korea for the Department of Defense, said the State Department would "certainly have been notified of Rodman's visit".

The U.S. government condemned the sentence and accused North Korea of using such American detainees as political pawns.

The president of an American university where a student attended before being imprisoned by North Korea says the school is "deeply concerned and saddened" to learn that he is in a coma. The regime arrested and charged him with "hostile acts" against the country and accused him of setting up bases in China for the objective of "toppling" the North Korean government; encouraging North Korean citizens to bring down the government; and conducting a "malignant smear campaign".

Warmbier was found guilty and sentenced in March 2016 to 15 years hard labor. He was last seen in public in late February 2016.

U.S. Senator Rob Portman of OH said: "Otto's detainment and sentence was unnecessary and appalling, and North Korea should be universally condemned for its abhorrent behavior. Otto should have been released from the start", said US Sen.

June 13, 2017 - Warmbier was evacuated from North Korea, accompanied by a medical team and a State Department representative.

"It is horrific that a young man in a coma was incarcerated in a North Korea jail", Connolly said in a statement. Rodman has said he practices "basketball diplomacy"; it is not clear whether he spoke on Warmbier's behalf. Anton said Rodman was not acting as a representative of the U.S. government or President Donald Trump.

On Tuesady morning, Tillerson reported to Trump that Warmbier is on the way home, and the last instruction Trump gave was: "Take care of Otto", the paper quoted a senior administration official as saying.

Southeast Asian nations Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore have also seen substantial gains in foreign reserves in recent months. The dollar was trading marginally better after data showing wholesale inflation eased in May but was still at elevated levels.

Warmbier's parents told The Washington Post he has been in a coma for more than a year after suffering from botulism.

The statement from Leigh contradicts the more serious claim North Korea made in May.

USA officials have not confirmed Warmbier's medical condition, but he's set to arrive in Cincinnati on Tuesday night after a stop at a US military facility near Sapporo, Japan. He said working toward their release is "not my objective right now", reported the Associated Press.

He added, "I'll discuss my mission when I return".

The State Department repeatedly warns Americans not to visit North Korea, which has detained a host of Americans over the years on a variety of charges.

Two of them, Kim Sang Duk and Kim Hak-song, are academics who worked at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology.

Kim Dong Chul has been sentenced to 10 years of hard labor.

Out of respect for the privacy of Warmbier, a University of Virginia student who was detained for 17 months, Tillerson didn't offer any further comment on Warmbier's health condition. North Korea's nuclear weapons program has now launched six missile tests.

But their fates have been hanging in the balance as Pyongyang and Washington have seen relations get testier in recent months.
