The shooting victims were practicing for a Congressional baseball game scheduled for the next night when a lone gunman opened fire on the crowd.

Paul said he could not see the shooter or gun.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who was also present at the practice, recounted the events to "Morning Joe".

Five people were "transported medically" from the scene, Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown said; however, it was unclear how many people had been shot.

"The only reason they were there was because we had a member of leadership on our team".

"We were picked up by a auto driving by that had a congressional staffer (inside). and left the scene at that point", Paul said.

On Capitol Hill, police had closed off the plaza in front of the Capitol, but tours were still being conducted for those visiting the House and Senate. Four people were shot and one congressman was shot in the hip.

A spokeswoman for Ross said the representative did not attend practice this morning and was doing fine. The Dallas LGBTQ community held a march for unity over the weekend, but organizers say there is still a long way to go especially with the local attacks that happened before and since the Orlando shooting. "The gunman was over by the third base dugout with a clear view of the field", the Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., told CNN. She said the officer had gotten out of a parked auto, drawn a handgun and shouted something to the gunman, who then fired.

"I don't know. If 26 children and teachers dead in Sandy Hook doesn't move this institution, I'm not sure anything will", Himes said.

Congressman Mo Brooks said he was on deck, preparing to bat, when the shooting started. Then he said he suddenly saw Scalise bleeding, crawling into the outfield. He said he heard "50 to 60 shots" before the Capitol Hill police responded. And Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, says a member of his staff was shot and is receiving medical attention.

House Speaker Paul Ryan's office said Scalise's wounds were not believed to be life-threatening and that a member of the security detail was also shot.

"Please pray for my colleagues", Duncan said.
