For the second time in half a year, a British Conservative prime minister has let political hubris dictate their decision to turn to the voting public.
May has said Brexit talks will begin on June 19 as scheduled, the same day as the formal reopening of parliament.
May also reappointed an old adversary - Michael Gove, a former rival for the Conservative leadership whom May fired from the Cabinet when she took office a year ago. May's office said Saturday principles of an agreement had been reached, but the two sides later clarified that they are still talking. Many senior Conservatives say May should stay, for now, to provide stability. It is inevitable now that with a reduced majority she will have to compromise her aims in order to get support from the other parties.
Britain's largely pro-Conservative press questioned whether May could remain in power.
Labour voters were more likely to be concerned about the NHS and spending cuts - only eight per cent said Brexit was the most important factor in their vote.
