Hundreds of people have fallen ill from food poisoning in a camp for displaced Iraqis east of Mosul, officials say.

The camp in al-Khazer, on the road linking Mosul and Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish region, houses 6,300 people, the UNHCR said.

Iraqi Health Minister Adila Hamoud told The Associated Press that 752 people in the camp became ill following a Monday night iftar - the meal breaking the dawn-to-dusk fast by Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported earlier the death of a woman and a child.

Most of the sick are children and the elderly after consuming a meal of rice, beans chicken, and a yogurt drink from an Erbil restaurant, Rudaw reported.

There have been conflicting reports about the alleged number of fatalities, adds the news agency.

"I don't know the name of the restaurant, but that's what our person on the site is reporting today", IOM spokeman Joel Millman said in Geneva. After visiting the site overnight, he accused a charity from Qatar of providing the food, a claim that was backed by Saudi Arabian state media.

Arbil health department sent a medic teams and 30 ambulances to the camp, bringing the most severe cases to hospitals in Arbil and other medical centers, Rudaw said.

A formal investigation was launched into the incident by authorities, said MP Raad Al Dahlaki, who chairs the Iraqi parliament's immigration and displacement committee. He said Iraqi officials were meeting its representatives later in the day. The Doha-based charity did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

"The police authorities are now carrying out an investigation into the incident", the UNHCR said in a statement on Facebook Tuesday.
