Newly tested missiles could be seen as "defensive in nature" - they are created to thwart enemy warship.

Last month, North Korea premiered a powerful new midrange missile that outside experts said flew higher than any other missile previously tested by North Korea.

The regime of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un has fired multiple anti-ship cruise missiles in its latest test not just of its missile technology but also of the worldwide community's patience.

So far, the North has launched 16 missiles in 10 tests so far in 2017, with Thursday's launch reportedly created to show off its ability to hit warships.

On May 27, North Korea conducted a surface-to-air guided missile test, believed to be a KN-06.

Pyongyang launched several land-to-sea missiles early Thursday, under the supervision of leader Kim Jong Un, KCNA said.

North Korea's regime has claimed that its new rocket could deliver a "large heavy nuclear warhead" all the way to the USA mainland.

No one doubts that Kim Jong Un wants an ICBM; many, however, wonder whether his missileers are close to delivering one that works.

"We condemn the latest provocations from DPRK and we look forward to working with our council colleagues about the best way to respond to them", Rycroft said, using the acronymm for the North's formal name.

Unlike its practice with ballistic-missile tests, which are banned under global law, the United States did not publicly comment on this launch.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea said Friday it has test-launched a new type of cruise missile capable of striking US and South Korean warships "at will", as South Korea found a suspected North Korean drone near the tense border between the rivals. The missiles, some of the most advanced weapons systems in Pyongyang's arsenal, flew for more than a hundred miles before falling into the Sea of Japan.

North Korea launched several cruise missiles into the Sea of Japan on Thursday, marking a fourth straight week of tests involving five different types of projectiles in a likely effort to showcase its military might.

"North Korea is carrying out carefully calibrated provocations... but restraining from ICBM tests or nuclear explosions which could bring about military retaliations by (US President Donald) Trump", he added.

But, to his chief officials President Moon stressed the need for a fundamentally different approach in addressing the North Korean problem.

The United States is increasingly concerned about the nuclear-armed North Korea's missile capabilities, especially its push to acquire intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), Yonhap notes.

The tension in North Korea is growing worse every month as the missile development is gaining pace. Thursday's test may point to improvement in its technology. On Tuesday, the U.S. Navy said its Nimitz carrier left San Diego to join the Carl Vinson and Ronald Reagan as part of a routine deployment.

The growing threat from the North - which insists it will continue with its nuclear weapons program despite global pressure and economic sanctions - was cited as the reason for last year's agreement by Washington and Seoul to station a Terminal High Altitude Area defense system on the divided peninsula.
