Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: Young England squad has chance to build something special

ALEX OXLADE-Chamberlain has admitted his versatility is a double-edged sword, but feels he has had a new start with England.

Five years ago on Sunday he made his first competitive appearance for England, against France, when he was a surprise starter for Roy Hodgson's opening Euro 2012 game.

He has, however, had to wait the best part of two years before adding to his tally.

But Oxlade-Chamberlain left his global boss in no doubt about preferring to play in an advanced role.

Across the Channel preparing for tonight's friendly against Les Bleus in Paris, the 23-year-old said he felt a bit like he was starting all over again.

He will hope that there are many more to come and that he can nail down a spot in Gareth Southgate's squad ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

Mix of pride, fear at LGBT marches

'That can be hard, particularly in the Premier League given how competitive it is and how many foreign players who come over wanting to win things.

Those opportunities seem unlikely at Arsenal as the Gunners boast the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka, Santi Cazorla and Mohamed Elneny, which suggests Oxlade-Chamberlain's future in North London lies out wide.

"Everything came quite quick and fast, and I got a lot of caps quite quickly, then was injured and had a spell out, missed the Euros".

On one hand he has now established himself at the Emirates and will play an important role for Wenger moving forward as the Gunners look to bounce back from an overall disappointing season despite their FA Cup success.

"In this squad, a lot of new boys have come in so it feels like a new squad". It's quite refreshing and I want to be a part of it. "We've got a really good chance to build something special from the moment moving forward, so for me that's been the most positive step forward".
