Gore has until July 7 to choose whether or not to sign and accept his more than $6-million signing bonus for being the third overall pick, or attend East Carolina.
With the No. 3 pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, the San Diego Padres have selected left-handed high school pitcher MacKenzie Gore.
Gore was considered a top-five pick by several recruiting services. In 2016, Gore went 12-1 with a 0.08 ERA and 174 strikeouts in 83 1/3 innings.
He was named national baseball player of the year by Gatorade on May 31 - becoming the first player from N.C.to ever win that award - and just a few days later guided Whiteville to its third state championship in four seasons.
Batting collapse a timely reminder for England - Morgan
Kagiso Rabada yorked Jason Roy in the fifth over with a delivery timed at 149.8 km/h, and 10 overs later England were 80/3. With pride at stake, South Africa took on England in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) at Lord's.
Gore has a fastball that reaches 95 miles per hour and also mixes in an effective curveball, slider and changeup.
Gore, a highly-athletic 18-year-old, will join the organization with high expectations, and plenty of reasons to be excited about his ability to meet them. He employs a big leg kick and gets good extension in his delivery, creating a deceptive look that can throw hitters off.
