A 20-year-old woman went on trial in the U.S. state of MA on Tuesday, accused of persuading her teenage boyfriend to kill himself, in a case that could break new legal ground.

Prosecutors say Carter sent text messages to Boardman saying, "I could have stopped him but I told him to get back in the vehicle".

"Your Honor, this case is a suicide case".

She said Carter's text said, "I put the Homers for Conrad on Facebook!".

In the days leading up to and following 18-year-old Conray Roy taking his life, his then-girlfriend Michelle Carter was in constant communication with him as well as others.

It is alleged she wanted him to take his own life so she could win sympathy and attention that came with being the "grieving girlfriend". "All you have to do is turn the generator on and you will be free and happy", she wrote, according to a document disseminated by the Bristol County District Attorney's Office. "I'm like famous now haha. check it out!" "I talked to her about it yesterday". "I mean he just graduated from high school, got his captain's license and I thought everything was moving forward, not backward", she said.

"I just wish I got him more help, I wish I could've called someone to help him that night".

Eithier was followed to the stand by Olivia Mosolgo, who was familiar with Carter, having met her when they were in seventh grade. They both later played on the same softball team.

The trial of the girl who allegedly urged her boyfriend to go through with committing suicide began Tuesday, with opening statements occurring in juvenile court in Taunton, Massachusetts.

"Stop telling me how wonderful & handsome I am. lovely girls get invited to parties". & their friends call & wanna hang out, " Carter wrote to Mosolgo. "I have like no friends". "I'm alone all the time".

Police also found Carter's written admission to a friend in which she recalled a phone call with Roy after he got out of his truck and told her he was scared and didn't want to abandon his family. "I heard him dying". "She listened to him as he died".

During testimony Tuesday, Roy's mother, Lynn Roy, said her son overdosed on an over-the-counter pain prescription in 2012 and was hospitalized.

Submitting Roy's psychiatric record as evidence, Cataldo suggested the young man's mental health issues were derived from a history of domestic abuse at the hands of his father and verbal abuse from his uncle and grandfather. "It was Conrad Roy's idea to take his own life". "I knew he was a little depressed but I thought it, he was doing great", she testified, according to ABC. When the family returned home, Roy said he was going to a friend's house. Lynn Roy casually asked if he'd be back for dinner.

"I don't think so, " he replied.

"He seemed fine", she said, although under cross-examination she added that her son later seemed "preoccupied". "You tried your hardest, I tried my hardest, everyone tried their hardest to save him".

But Carter's defence lawyer Joseph Cataldo said Mr Roy had already been contemplating suicide, even researching online for possible ways to kill himself. He had also tried to commit suicidal once before, but in 2014, he tragically succumbed to carbon monoxide and was found dead inside his truck in a parking lot.
