Rafa Nadal beats Wawrinka for 10th French Open title

Sometimes, the French Open offers some shocking outcomes. "I'm pretty sure I've lost my auto keys 35 times this year".

Nadal never relented in this first men's final featuring two thirty-somethings at Roland Garros since 1969.

Winners are normally given a small trophy to keep.

Sunday's final in Paris represented Nadal's 79th victory out of 81 matches at the French Open. Nadal cruised in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

"After a few years with many problems he came back here with a lot of courage", Toni Nadal said in French.

Nadal, who won his first French Open title at the age of 19 in 2005, had gone three years without a Grand Slam crown.

Nadal insists his liking for the number nine does not come from his French Open tally.

He claimed the Musketeers Cup without dropping a set in the tournament for the third time, having lost only 35 games en route to achieving what has been dubbed "La Decima".

Yet Nadal's artistry on the red courts was apparent from midway through the opening set - he registered the final's first break to go 4-2 ahead before then immediately taking Wawrinka's next service game as well. "It's true that 10 is a attractive number, but actually my favorite is nine", Nadal said before facing Wawrinka, the 2015 French Open victor.

Stan Wawrinka took out some of his frustration Sunday on his racket.

Wawrinka had to be aggressive but he was making far too many unforced errors - 17 in the first set alone.

His play at the French Open hasn't been, that's for sure.

He is not dubbed the "King of Clay" for no reason.

Asked what the most hard moments were during the past fortnight, Nadal was stumped.

Past year he walked away from Paris with his wrist wrapped in a blue bandage, his eyes red from emotion after he was forced to pull out ahead of his third round due to injury, at a time when he believed he was finally recovering his best form. Incredibly, it was just his first loss ever at the French Open.

His journey over the last 12 months has taken him from vacationing with his girlfriend on a boat trying to forget his woes, to being No1 in the Race to London, No2 in the world, with a 10 Roland Garros trophy in tow.

They also won the Australian Open in 2015 and this January, along with the U.S. Open last September.

The defeated Wawrinka admitted Nadal was just too hot to handle. The sun was shining, there was barely a trace of cloud in the bright blue sky and the temperature was about 85 degrees (30 Celsius). He's been nothing short of phenomenal on the clay court. The only way for Wawrinka to emerge as a victor in this match was to keep the points on his racquet constantly and to paint the lines, which he was unable to do, making too many errors and struggling to find the open court against the wall that he faced on the other side of the net.
