Graham Brady, who chairs the influential 1922 committee of Conservative lawmakers, said there was no public appetite for a second election after May's party failed to win a majority in Thursday's vote.
Theresa May has been warned she will have to re-think her Brexit negotiating strategy following her humiliation at the ballot box. She named her Cabinet Sunday, keeping most of the ministers in their posts and even appointing an old adversary, Michael Gove, to the post of environment secretary. As May struggled to contain the fallout, her two closest aides resigned.
May was reportedly told by party MPs to change her working style, sack Timothy and Hill, or face a leadership challenge.
Pressure on British Prime Minister Theresa May continued to build on Saturday amid criticism from within and outside the Conservative Party of the electoral campaign that resulted in the party losing its overall majority. At such a critical time, the Prime Minister must be clear with the people about the deal she has stitched up with the DUP behind closed doors. Johnson called the report "tripe" in a tweet, in which he said he was supporting May. "Let's get on with the job". Gavin Barwell was named new chief of staff.
The Conservatives won 318 out of 650 seats - throwing away a 17-seat majority.
This is not a party which is likely to be sated by a few million pounds for Northern Ireland. A spokesman for Johnson said he was "100 percent behind the prime minister", however.
No 10 had earlier said the DUP had agreed the principles of a deal and it would be discussed at a cabinet meeting on Monday.
A "confidence and supply" arrangement is a far looser deal than a formal coalition or pact. Or to put it another way, the deal with the DUP represents life or death both for the new government and for Mrs May as PM.
Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson indicated she wanted to see a fresh approach to Brexit by seeking a consensus across parties.
The pound on Friday fell 1.7 per cent against the US dollar and 1.4 per cent against the euro.
The fact that the DUP so quickly jumped in to point out the mistake - fully aware of the consequences for a weakened Theresa May - will no doubt alarm a prime minister who was already reeling from being shorn of her two key advisers. But one issue is that the Brexit talks are due to start on the 19th of this month. She confirmed this to German leader Angela Merkel in a phone call on Saturday.
Thousands mourn Tehran attack victims, chant "Death to Saudi"
Men in military uniform stand at a window in the Iranian Parliament building following an attack on Wednesday in Tehran . A senior official, who also asked not to be named, said the attacks would push Iran toward "a harsher regional policy".
In a television interview Sunday with Sky News at Downing Street, May say she would help deliver the "stability and certainty" the country needs during the reshuffling.
She said: "They have achieved little propping up Tory governments in the past and put their own interests before those of the people".
Britain's largely pro-Conservative press questioned whether May could remain in power.
"Don't under-estimate the importance of doing the DUP deal" another of Mrs May's colleagues told me.
In calling for early elections, May said she wanted a strong mandate as her government confronts what are likely to be hard negotiations with the European Union on the terms of Brexit. However, the Liberal Democrats ruled out a coalition in 2017's election.
Timothy was widely cited as the main proponent among May's aides for a botched plan for elderly social care that caused a major backlash from Conservative supporters.
The Times newspaper's front page declared that Britain was "effectively leaderless" and the country "all but ungovernable".
The arrangement makes some Conservatives uneasy. From whom? From her party?
Its eurosceptic wing has always been a thorn in the side of Conservative prime ministers. "That's not a matter for me", she said. She has said she favours retaining the greatest possible level of access to Europe's single market.
Mr English said he spoke to Mrs May last night.
