The star, famous for his tongue-in-cheek portrayal of the Caped Crusader and his alter ego Bruce Wayne, died at home in Los Angeles after a short battle with leukaemia.

West remained friends with the actor who played Batman's trusty sidekick, Robin. West kept a drawing of Batman by Kane, who inscribed it: "To my buddy, Adam, who breathed life into my pen and ink creation".

WEST: Batman could never be subtle, and he - my Batman at least, I don't know, must always believe that nobody could recognize him even though his voice was the same and so on.

After Batman was cancelled in 1968 after three seasons, West struggled unsuccessfully against typecasting, appearing as a guest star in many different TV shows and the films The Marriage of a Young Stockbroker (1971), Hooper (1978), and The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood (1980). "He had it all - looks, charm, intelligence, I could go on and on", she said.

According to City News Service, the flowers will be placed on West's star at 6764 Hollywood Blvd on Saturday.

"He was and always will be our hero". "This is a terribly unexpected loss of my lifelong friend, I will forever miss him".

A generation that grew up with West's Batman embraced him in his later years, and West became a voiceover actor on such animated shows as Family Guy, where his self-deprecating wit served him well as the voice of Quahog mayor Adam West.

In bringing Batman to life West delivered his often corny lines with deadpan earnestness, entertaining children and adding a touch of satirical humor for adults.

Born in Walla Walla, Washington, West moved to Hawaii to pursue a TV career after serving in the U.S. Army, where he worked as an announcer on the American Forces Network station. "Adam West was a joy to work with, and the kind of guy you always wanted to be around".

So perhaps there is a gentle footnote in the context of West's death, coming as it does as the guard changes in the genre he made his own.

Actor Kumail Nanjiani remembered West as the "first person I saw who was amusing, badass [and] cool all at once".

WEST: (Singing) Adam West, Adam West.

He is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Loved the show as a kid, still love the show now. POW!

He returned to the role in an episode of "The Simpsons" and in 2003's "Return to the Batcave", in which he reminisced with his former co-star Ward, reprising his role as Robin, while chasing villains who had stolen the Batmobile from a museum.
