Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have cut diplomatic ties on Monday and are trying to blockade Qatar by air and sea. The Qatari Foreign Ministry said in a statement the two held talks on how "restore the normal relations" of the Gulf as the 2022 FIFA World Cup host and worldwide air travel hub now finds itself isolated by land, sea and air.
According to Qatari officials, during the call President Trump "expressed his readiness to find a solution to the diplomatic crisis in the Gulf, stressing his keenness on maintaining stability in the Gulf".
Turkey's parliament on Wednesday approved deploying troops to a Turkish base in Qatar under a previously agreed plan, in a move seen as a sign of support for Doha.

Christopher Davidson, reader in Middle East politics at Durham University, said the ongoing crisis would make Qatar and the rest of the Gulf less attractive locations for universities looking to set up overseas.
As the crisis has expanded, Doha, the world's largest exporter of natural gas, has called on its strategic allies and important partners around the world to intervene.

Qatar said it leads the region in attacking what it called the roots of terrorism, giving young people hope through jobs, educating hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and funding community programmes to challenge extremist agendas.

On Thursday, Sheikh Mohammed told the AP that Sheikh Tamim "is not going to leave the country while the country is in blockade", in effect turning down the offer of mediation.
