Jelena Ostapenko stuns Simona Halep in French Open final

Jelena Ostapenko said she was amazed to be the first unseeded player since 1933 to capture the French Open today in a stunning and fearless 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Simona Halep.

Ostapenko's memorable journey also sees her become the first unseeded French Open champion in the Open era and, at 20-years-old and two days, becomes the youngest Grand Slam victor since Maria Sharapova at the 2006 US Open.

20-year-old tennis player from Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko in the status of the 47-th racket of the world became the victor of tournament of series Grand slam.

The last woman to win her first title at a major was Barbara Jordan at the 1979 Australian Open.

Halep only had 10 unforced errors, compared to 54 for Ostapenko, but the Latvian made up for that with 54 winners.

Halep, beaten by Maria Sharapova in the final here in 2014, had been the favourite from the start of the tournament and looked to be cruising at a set and 3-0, with points for 4-0. "I have to say a star is born", Evert, working as pundit for broadcaster Eurosport said.

The problem for the 2014 Wimbledon junior champion, however, was that she was missing too much in the first set.

The previous time an unseeded player won the women's title at the French Open.

Ostapenko said she was amazed by her win.

"I think Simona, maybe she felt a little bit nervous because she had a lot of pressure".

"Three years ago was something new, so now I know".

But as she has done throughout the entire French Open, Ostapenko found a way to battle right back, as she broke right back in the ensuing game, and then held serve to tie the match back up.

Her wait for a maiden Grand Slam triumph goes on.

A reeling Halep surrendered the set when Ostapenko struck a blazing forehand victor down the line, to the crowd's approval.
