SNP veteran and former first minister Alex Salmond has lost his Gordon seat to the Tories, as the nationalists saw their share of the vote slump.
The Scottish National Party, which almost swept the board in Scotland two years ago, saw a resurgent Conservative Party north of the border claim scalps including former leader Alex Salmond and deputy leader Angus Robertson.
The Tories and Labour have both taken seats from the SNP, with veteran nationalist Mike Weir ousted by the Conservatives.
Nicola Sturgeon insisted that the party had "won the election in Scotland" despite losing more than 21 seats - including two of the party's biggest names.
Ms Swinson had held the seat for a decade before being ousted by Mr Nicolson in 2015.
"Nicola Sturgeon, I hope you're listening". They also took the scalp of SNP deputy leader Robertson in Moray, the whisky-distilling area that had the highest vote for Brexit in Scotland.
He said: "If this poll is correct it would still point to the SNP winning the election in Scotland, which is what we set out to achieve".
He was the party's campaigns director for the 2007 and 2011 Scottish elections and previously served as business convener, chairing the SNP's National Executive Committee, the annual national conference and the policy-making forum National Council.
"In any terms, that means the SNP, by winning more votes and more seats, have won this election in Scotland".

However, Justice Edson Fachin, who approved the written interrogation, said Temer was not obliged to answer them all. Brazilian media say the questions focus on a conversation between Temer and one of the owners of meatpacker JBS.
The polls suggest Scotland could see a Tory resurgence on the back of Ms Davidson's consistent message of opposition to a second independence referendum.
"What we've got is a crushing result for the SNP, they've lost 20 seats if not more and further than that they've watched their majorities crumble".
The first results from Scotland are expected to be returned in the early hours of the morning, between 1.30am and 2.30am.
Gerard Killen claimed the seat for Jeremy Corbyn's party with 19,101 votes, defeating the SNP's Margaret Ferrier, who won the constituency in 2015 but who polled 18,836 votes this time round.
Ms Sturgeon said: "It seems like a long time ago, does it not, that Theresa May stood on the steps of Downing Street and called this unnecessary election".
Voters in the Holyrood constituency of Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire will also be voting to choose their MSP in a by-election triggered by the resignation of Conservative John Lamont to fight for the Westminster constituency seat of Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk.
Conservative Scottish Secretary David Mundell told BBC Scotland: "It's becoming increasingly clear the SNP bubble has burst".
In Paisley and Renfrewshire South, the SNP's Mhairi Black was re-elected with 16,964 votes - although the party's support in the seat fell by 10%.
