With superstars such as Andy Murray, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Canelo Alvarez now eating his dust, a moment should be taken to appreciate what Conor McGregor has been able to do for himself and his family, because love him or hate him, after a 2016 where he went home with a mind-boggling $34 million, you just can not deny he has come up with a winning formula.

Forbes has released its 2017 list of highest paid athletes, with soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo and basketballer LeBron James topping the list.

Ronaldo is also set to be toward the top of the Forbes list for the foreseeable future after securing a contract extension with Los Blancos that will pay more than $50 million annually for the next four years.

The Forbes figures include salaries, prize money and bonuses earned between June 1, 2016, and June 1, 2017.

James is one of three players competing in this year's NBA Finals to crack the top 10 highest-paid athletes.

The Euro 2016 victor earned $93m (£72.05m) from salary, bonuses and endorsements a year ago. Basketball star Lebron James took the number two spot with $86.2 million.

According to the listing, McGregor's rating is based on his wins over Nate Diaz and Eddie Alvarez.

Joshua is further down the list at 89 after pocketing $22 million in a breakout year for the heavyweight.

Irish golfer Rory McIlroy is up to joint sixth, from last year's 17th place, following multi-million sponsorship deals with Nike and TaylorMade.
