The apparently successful launch on Sunday of a mid-to-long range missile appeared to confirm a leap forward in the country's drive towards an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
"It is considered an intermediate range ballistic missile of enhanced caliber compared to Musudan missiles that have continually failed", he said.
North Korea's state news agency KCNA said the launch Sunday was meant to test if it could carry a "large-size heavy nuclear warhead".
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the launch of the Hwasong-12 missile on May 14 that reached an altitude of 2,111.5 kilometers (1,312 miles) and flew 787 kilometers. That's higher and closer to Russian Federation than other North Korean tests, according to USA officials.
North Korea has made no secret of its desire to develop an ICBM capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the USA mainland, but many had believed it was far from mastering the re-entry technology needed for perfecting an ICBM, which uses similar engineering in early flight stages. The KCNA said the test launch verified the homing feature of the warhead that allowed it to survive under an extreme re-entry situation before detonation, suggesting it tested its atmospheric re-entry technology for an ICBM.
North Korea says the medium long-range strategic missile it tested over the weekend can carry a nuclear warhead.
North Korea's ambassador to China says that Pyongyang's test-firing of a ballistic missile over the weekend is part of the country's efforts to develop ways to defend itself against hostile aggression overseas.
He added that the Defense Ministry was able to confirm the North's missile launch Sunday two minutes after it was sacked at around 5:29 a.m. from a South Korean Navy Aegis-equipped DDG-992 destroyer.

In response to Sunday's launch, Moon strongly condemned North Korea, saying there still remains the possibility of a productive inter-Korean dialogue but that the South would deal rigorously with any such provocation. Those tests, however, likely gave North Korea significant technological knowledge they would have built upon for future tests.
"The U.S. military confirmed that the X-band radar deployed in Seongju detected [North Korea's missile]", the defense chief said, emphasizing the necessity of the antimissile system that has been placed in a golf course in Seongju County, North Gyeongsang, last month. South Korean companies, from automakers to retailers and cosmetics firms, have been hit in China by a nationalist backlash over Seoul's decision to deploy the system.
Speaking in Beijing on May 15, Putin said nuclear tests of the type that Pyongyang had been carrying out in recent weeks were unacceptable, but that a peaceful solution to rising tensions on the Korean peninsula was needed.
Vice President Mike Pence cautioned during a visit to the demilitarized zone between the North and South in April that the U.S.'s policy of "strategic patience" toward North Korea had ended and that all options remained on the table.
Trump warned in an interview with Reuters this month that a "major, major conflict" with North Korea was possible.
As reported by the Reuters news agency, Russian Federation is looking at ways to benefit between the cooling relations between North Korea and China.
