China pledges $124 billion for new Silk Road as champion of globalization

China, which has been angered by North Korea's repeated missile and nuclear tests, said on Saturday in reaction to the US complaint that all were welcome at the Silk Road forum.

Chinese initiative of One Belt and One Road (OBOR) has the potential to bring about lasting peace, stability and economic integration in the region, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the flagship programme of OBOR. He termed the Belt and Road Forum a significant opportunity for all the countries along the belt.

Xi also pledged an additional assistance worth 60 billion yuan (US $9.5 billion) for developing countries and worldwide organisations participating in the initiative to improve people's well-being over the next three years.

The B and Road initiative should be built into a road for peace, as the pursuit of the initiative requires a peaceful and stable environment, Xi told the forum attended by 29 heads of state and government besides representatives of over 100 countries and global organisations.

The Chinese president also said he will sign trade and economic cooperation treaties with more than 30 countries during the forum.

"We should build an open platform of cooperation and uphold and grow an open world economy", Mr. Xi told the opening of the summit.

"China is demonstrating that it is a responsible global player in the worldwide society", Mr Shi said.

"In advancing the Belt and Road, we will not re-tread the old path of games between foes".

"It is estimated that fast-developing Asia needs to invest an average of $1.7 trillion annually until 2030 for such issues as growth, the fight against poverty and taking necessary measures against climate change", he said, adding that work at this dimension must be run with a sense of co-operation rather than competition.

The U.S. -based Human Rights Watch on May 13 raised concerns about the treatment of people along the new Silk Road route in western China that borders Central Asia.

"I believe that this initiative, also called the New Silk Road, will mark the future in an effort to link Asia, Europe, Africa and even South America", the president added.

The "Belt and Road" is Xi's signature foreign policy initiative.

A total of 29 foreign heads of state and government leaders attended the forum, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, said that China's big pledge could "help boost global trade, investment, and financial cooperation".

"US firms have a long and successful track record in global infrastructure development, and are ready to participate in belt and road projects", Pottinger said.

The B&R includes a maze of roads and port projects.

Several other European leaders, including the prime ministers of Spain, Italy, Greece and Hungary, are also attending the summit.

Of the six corridors of Belt and Road, to New Delhi's interest is the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar route.
