Vettel's participation in qualifying had been in doubt before Q1, with an FP3 stoppage prompting Ferrari into an engine change in the two-hour gap.

Hamilton has been the driver to beat so far this weekend in Spain, leading both of the Friday practice sessions.

"Amazing job by the team today and I am just super proud that we could finally get back up there [after my struggles in Sochi]". The plan now is to thank all the guys since thanks to them I made it to qualifying.

"But I could hear the crowd cheering and could see the flags". Today is for all the mechanics - and also those on Kimi's vehicle because they helped out. Kimi [Raikkonen]'s crew helped out too.

"Quite amusing at one point when one vehicle on one side of the garage was one or two mechanics, while the other one was completely crowded like bees hovering around the auto so I think great effort so big thanks. A great effort, so big thanks".

Wenger said: 'He asked to come off. "I thought he had done a stomach muscle so it might go away and I could see how he responds". RH: I've enjoyed getting on the ball a bit more and being able to play, with three at the back there's a bit more safety.

It marked the first time a McLaren vehicle has progressed to the top-10 shootout this season and there were high-fives in the team garage which included Mansour Ojjeh, who owns a 25 per cent stake in the British outfit. The British driver set a time of 1min 19.149sec in Q3, which meant that he edged out Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel by 0.05sec.

"It would have been nice to get them the pole, but hopefully we can do well tomorrow". Yesterday I wasn't happy with the vehicle balance at all and today it was phenomenal. "We still suffered a but from that but, apart from that, things have been running smoothly, the auto feels good, so it's up to me to make it better".

Valtteri said: "For most of the weekend we've had the edge on Ferrari but in Q3 they raised their game". Conditions were very tricky, with the wind, never easy, never knowing what to expect. "I feel like I have really grown a lot in Spain over the last ten years and I really appreciate all the support".

"Lewis did a great job: it was tricky to put the sectors together today, and I'm not sure any driver had a flawless lap, but he did two times good enough for pole position in Q3 and really deserved it".

While Valtteri Bottas has impressed since he replaced defending champion Nico Rosberg at Mercedes - indeed he claimed the first victory of his career at the last round in Russian Federation and is just 10 points adrift of Hamilton - the Finnish driver was offered only a one-year deal after he joined from Williams. "Usually they put a lot of rubber down everywhere so I don't think that's a real disadvantage - and then as I said, I just need to do everything right and that's the best way to attack and defend". "It is all milliseconds between us".
