A K9 officer in South Florida is expected to recover after being shot in a gunfight where the suspect was killed.
Investigators earlier in the day were looking for Philip Oshea, a 46-year-old suspect in a robbery at a suburban West Palm Beach bar around 4 a.m., the Palm Beach Post reported. One deputy and a K9 were injured. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw says O'Shea had an extensive criminal history and was wanted in Raleigh, North Carolina, in connection with a May 2 motel robbery. The suspect crashed his auto and got into his first shootout of the day, with one deputy getting hurt while diving for cover, the newspaper reported.
It was not immediately clear what brought Oshea to Palm Beach County. A short pursuit ensued. He was treated in the hospital and was released later that morning. He was later shot and killed as he again engaged in gunfire with deputies.
The sheriff's office added, "Kasper took a bullet that was meant for his K9 Partner".
Companies urged to secure networks after cyber attack
The attack has sparked a political blame-game over who should take responsibility for the NHS's computer security failures. Ms Rudd said it was not yet known who was behind the attack, but insisted that the NHS had not been deliberately targeted.
K9 Kasper is now in stable condition, and recovering.
"During the gunfire, PBSO K9 Kasper was shot while protecting his handler", the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post that included a photo of the wounded dog on a veterinarian's operating table.
Three deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave while the FDLE investigates.
