Hamas elects Haniyeh as new political chief: spokesman

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday symbolically tossed into a trash can a Hamas policy paper published last week that set out an apparent softening of the Palestinian Islamist group's stance towards Israel.

The 42-point document reaffirms the group's belief that "no part of the lines and no part of Palestine shall be compromised or conceded".

In June 2007, Hamas fighters took complete control over the Gaza Strip, following a week of clashes between Hamas and Fatah, resulting from the firing of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh (Hamas) by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Fatah).

Trump said the Palestinians and Israelis must work together to reach an agreement that allows both peoples to live, worship, thrive and prosper in peace.

"Haniyeh is a charismatic figure and is popular at home and overseas", Mukhemar Abu Saada, a professor of political sciences at Gaza-based Al-Azhar University, told Anadolu Agency.

Hamas' separation from the Brotherhood, Al-Oraby said, is "a positive step" to melt the ice in ties with Egypt, whose Rafah border crossing is Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip's main gateway to the outside world.

"The terrorism label is one of the biggest challenges facing Hamas, which is seeking, via its charter, to tell the world that it's a nationalist group", he said.

Nakhala said the new Hamas policy formally accepting the idea of a state in the territories occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War would "lead to deadlock and can only produce half-solutions".

Indeed, it is only by virtue of Falcinelli’s prowess in the final third that Crotone still remains in contention to survive. In Romelu Lukaku, Koeman has a player with the capability of firing Everton to far headier heights than seventh place.

In his debut speech following his election as the Islamic Resistance Movement's top official, Haniyeh said that working for the sake of the prisoners has run very deep within Hamas, and still does.

Israeli analysts say that the growing rift between Fatah and Hamas is more serious an issue than the Hamas change of leadership.

He said if Hamas would "seriously" consider dropping connections with the Brotherhood, it would improve ties not only with Egypt but also with its USA and Arab Gulf states allies as well.

"The prisoners' cause is - and will remain - a top priority for Hamas and all Palestinian leaders", Haniyeh said.

In the decade since, Hamas has fired thousands of rockets at civilian centers in Israel, survived three wars against the Israeli army, and, Israeli officials say, continuously built up its military force. The document stressed that it would not recognize Israel but lacked the movement's longstanding call for violence against Israel.

Following his release, Israel deported Haniya to southern Lebanon along with other senior Hamas leaders, where he spent a year.

"As partners with our Hamas brothers in the struggle for liberation, we feel concern over the document", said Islamic Jihad's deputy leader, Ziad al-Nakhala.
