Central Intelligence Agency creates dedicated mission center for North Korea

CIA Director Mike Pompeo gave a more positive assessment of the Chinese efforts to rein in the North, saying the country has "made efforts in a way that they have not made before".

The U.S. intelligence chief said Thursday North Korea poses a potentially "existential threat" to the United States with its growing nuclear and missile capabilities.

The center is likely to focus on collecting and analyzing intelligence related to North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile technology.

Dedicating a center to a country instead of a region shows the North's importance to the administration of President Donald Trump, which has been locked in a standoff with Pyongyang over its development of ballistic missiles and nuclear deterrents. "The visit of North Korean officials brings a new opportunity to cool the tensions and pave the way for possible bilateral or multilateral talks", Zhang Tuosheng, a director at the China Foundation for global and Strategic Studies, said.

On the other hand, Trump shocked the South Koreans by announcing at the end of April that South Korea would have to pay $1 billion for the THAAD system, despite an existing agreement that the USA would bear the cost. "It also reflects the dynamism and agility that Central Intelligence Agency brings to evolving national security challenges", he added.

Nixon, the former analyst, said he also expects significant cooperation with South Korean intelligence services going forward.

Trump should also make sure the South's offer of aid to the North won't undermine USA efforts to put maximum pressure on the North, they said.

"Trump's invitation for Moon to come to Washington, D.C., for consultations on a combined alliance strategy on North Korea is a good first step", they said.

"According to what I understand, the North Korean side will send an official delegation to relevant events at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation that will shortly be taking place", China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a daily briefing yesterday.

"I think they are trying to incent the Chinese to change their view of this". So the question is: did the Trump administration push a military confrontation with North Korea to the top of its foreign policy agenda in order to pre-empt Moon Jae-in's new Sunshine policy?

"The US House of Representatives should think twice", the committee said in its letter, a copy of which was published by the KCNA state news agency.

Trump warned of "major conflict" with North Korea after the tests.

China has been upset by the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense system that was approved by Moon's conservative predecessor as a hedge against North Korea, placing Seoul in a hard spot between its closest military ally in Washington and its largest trading partner in Beijing.
