"We spent a lot of time looking at sequels and the idea of sequel-itis", said David Hollis, distribution chief for Disney.

In a long and emotional Facebook post, he wrote: "As we open up around the world, I would be lying if I said I don't get distracted by the numbers".

Although Gunn has yet to confirm when he will begin working on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3", he may have teased a release date in another post addressed to the fans of the film.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had a massive opening weekend, accumulating $425 million (Rs 2700 crore) worldwide. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 scored an 81% approval rating from critics, just a little ways down from the original's 91% approval rating.

Fair warning, the following story will contain spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The sequel, as is often the case, cost more to make, at $200 million, according to Box Office Mojo. "We realize that Gef has been on the ship the entire time mortally wounded", Gunn explained.

Sinclair Broadcast Group buys Fox 13's owner, Tribune Media, for $3.9 billion
Sinclair, which owns around 150 local TV stations , historically has focused on owning multiple stations is small markets. Early Monday morning stock trading had Sinclair's stock up 7% to $39.60 and Tribune stock 6% higher to $42.51.

Even though the MCU was firmly established when we first met the Guardians, the characters were far from well known, so it was a fairly sizable risk on Marvel's part to put them in their own movie. Like with the release of The Fate of the Furious four weeks ago, all of the other major releases that could have been released this weekend made a decision to be released next week or weeks from now. That sets a new mark for an Indian film at the worldwide box office.

"The Fate of the Furious", $8.5 million ($30.1 million international).

In fourth was Pantelion s "How to be a Latin Lover", a comedy starring Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez, with $5.3 million in ticket sales. Where available, the latest global numbers also are included. Finally, Going in Style and Smurfs: The Lost Village finished in ninth and tenth place with $1.9 and $1.8 million respectively, bringing both of their totals to an identical $40.6 million.

Gunn also confirms that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be the last of its franchise.

"Baahubali 2: The Conclusion", $43.9 million.
