Author of memo about Comey is overseeing Russia-2016 probe

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo had pointed out that the sudden firing of Comey came as the FBI's counterintelligence investigation of Russia's interference with the 2016 USA presidential election is heating up.

President Donald Trump's stunning firing of FBI Director James Comey throws into question the future of a counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign's possible connections to Russian Federation.

But the Obama White House left Comey dangling after his much-criticized announcements regarding Clinton, saying it was up to Comey to defend himself in the face of what Obama spokesman Josh Earnest called "significant criticism from a variety of legal experts, including individuals who served in senior Department of Justice positions in administrations that were led by presidents in both parties".

Trump's decision to fire the FBI director is virtually unprecedented, only one director has previously been fired in the bureau's century-long history.

The FBI's deputy director, Andrew McCabe, was named the acting director until Trump appoints a replacement and the Senate confirms the appointment.

Other potential choices include Republican Representative Trey Gowdy, a former prosecutor who led a congressional inquiry into former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's role in the 2012 attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

October 28, 2016: Trump reacts to FBI's decision to investigate new messages related to Clinton's emails, telling a campaign rally that he has "great respect for the Federal Bureau of Investigation for righting this wrong".

Trump disagreed with Clinton's assessment, tweeting that Comey actually "was the best thing that ever happened to Hillary Clinton in that he gave her a free pass for many bad deeds!" She has since cited the letter to Congress as a main cause of her shocking and unexpected defeat by Trump.

Jonathan Demme Dies, Montclair Film Festival Mourns
Oscar-winning USA film director Jonathan Demme, who terrified audiences and also made them laugh, died Wednesday in NY at 73. I am heartbroken to lose a friend, a mentor, a guy so singular and dynamic you'd have to design a hurricane to contain him.

But just last November, after Trump was elected president, Schumer sang a different tune.

The 56-year-old Comey, who is popular among rank-and-file agents, was appointed four years ago. Up until the moment of his dismissal, Director Comey was actively investigating President Donald John Trumps' connection to Russian interference in the 2016 election.

And the association wants a say in who will be the next director.

January 22, 2017: Two days after taking office, Trump appears to single out Comey at a White House reception to thank law enforcement officers and others that helped during the inauguration. Trump called Comey over to where he was standing in the Blue Room to offer a handshake and a partial hug, then commented that Comey has "become more famous than me".

Republican Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri said Comey served the country well, but "many, including myself, have questioned his actions a couple of times over the past year".

I heard some criticism from Republican/conservative commentators when Comey bad-mouthed Clinton at the press conference, but not almost as much as I'm hearing now.

During testimony to Congress last month, Comey overtly challenged the president, flatly rejecting his explosive claim that he was wiretapped by his predecessor. His dismissal had also came as a surprise after the attorney said Trump asked him to remain in his post shortly after the election. But he told senators: "I can't consider for a second whose political futures will be affected and in what way".

In Comey's words, there were possibly "hundreds or thousands" of emails of this nature.
