An attorney for Edwards' family told The Associated Press that the shooting brings to mind the high-profile deaths of other black people after police encounters that have sparked outrage and protest in recent years. Since the killing, Roy Oliver, the officer who fired his rifle into the departing auto, has been dismissed from the Dallas Police Department, and his actions have been seriously criticized by both his former employer and the African-American community at large.
Questions remain as to what happened during a police shooting in Balch Springs that left 15-year-old Jordan Edwards dead on April 29.
Roy Oliver fired his rifle into a vehicle of unarmed teens Saturday night as they drove away, fatally striking Jordan Edwards in the head. Jordan, the front-seat passenger, was struck in the head.
In at least 17 cases, police acknowledge that the person killed was in the act of fleeing, was a passenger in a vehicle or was in a vehicle that was not in motion and did not pose a threat to officers. Video footage revealed that the vehicle was driving away when that officer fired his rifle.
Lee Merritt, an attorney for Edwards' family said one of his brothers was held by police overnight, but police said later he was only held as a witness for questioning.
The brother who was driving pulled over and tried to motion to police for help, she said. "I do feel there's a sense of fear that comes into a lot of officers' minds, because it's the fear of the unknown".

For Trump's critics, questions keep arising about potential violations of the "emoluments" clause of the Constitution. Yates and Clapper both stated they had not leaked any information about Flynn, nor had they directed anyone to do so.
Police Chief Jonathan Haber announced that he's reversed his original opinion about the shooting. After heading into the house to try to break up the party, the chief said Oliver heard gunshots outside. They want to hear a public apology for that from Balch Springs PD.
The suburb has seen major demographic change during the last two decades. He is White. Edwards was Black. The mayor and city manager are both African-American women. The officer's identity and race are also being withheld, with Haber refusing to release the video itself. Nationwide, about 27 percent of local police officers were minorities, according to a 2013 federal survey. "While the investigation is still ongoing, we must fact that we have lost another young black male at the hands of a law enforcement official".
An updated statement was published to the Balch Springs Police Department on Monday evening. He served six years in the Army, with two deployments to Iraq, and later completed nearly two years in the Texas National Guard. His attorney, Cindy Stormer, did not return messages Wednesday.
As they drove away from the party, Crockett said, the brother driving the vehicle heard multiple gunshots that were close enough to leave his ears ringing. Chief Jonathan Haber said that the decision to fire Oliver was made after reviewing the body cam footage from Oliver and one other officer on the scene as after an internal investigation had been completed. The video has not been released.
The police didn't detail Oliver's violations, saying he is entitled to appeal his firing and that the Dallas County district attorney together with the Dallas County sheriff's office are now investigating the case. He said that this case stood out for its "sheer recklessness". The Dallas County sheriff's office is also investigating.
