"The regime will be committed to the deal because the Russians are the guarantor, so if the Russians said no bombing, the regime will stop".
In Washington, a Pentagon spokesman said in a statement that Dunford and Gerasimov "talked about the recent Astana agreement and affirmed their commitment to de-conflicting operations in Syria".

Three countries backing different sides in Syria's war have agreed to set up "safe zones" in the country, while delegates for rebel forces stormed out in protest.
The opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC), said on Friday the safe zones plan lacked "safeguards and compliance mechanisms". The initiative was proposed by Russian Federation, the Syrian regime's most powerful ally, with the support of Turkey, which backs the opposition.
It builds on a ceasefire agreed between Russian Federation and Turkey last December that reduced violence for a period but gradually fell apart.

The de-escalation zones are along Syria's southern border with Jordan, in the eastern Damascus suburbs, in Idlib province, and in a pocket of the central province of Homs. He said this was because Qaboun contained the al-Qaeda-linked group formerly known as the Nusra Front.

On Saturday the Observatory said rockets hit Qaboun, where the government has been pressing an offensive for several weeks, and there were clashes between rebels and government and allied forces.
