Sharapova gets lukewarm welcome after 15-month doping ban

Canada's Eugenie Bouchard had some harsh words for Maria Sharapova, calling the Russian tennis star a "cheater" who shouldn't be allowed back in the sport after failing a doping test.

The world No 7, who will next face Latvia's Anastasija
Sevastova, said: "Even though I lost the second set I didn't feel like I did much wrong".

"You have to look at how other league and tours have handled players who have come back", Simon told BBC Sport.

MARIA SHARAPOVA MADE a winning return as she took centre court for the first time this afternoon following a 15-month doping ban.

Meanwhile Sharapova will know on May 16 if she'll be granted a wildcard invitation for the French Open, the organisers of the May 28-June 11 grand slam tournament said on Wednesday.

"It's good for tennis that she has come back", Vinci said after the match.

It will be Sharapova's first match since her quarter-final defeat to World number one Serena Williams at the 2016 Australian Open, where she was tested positive for banned substance meldonium, Sport24 reported.

If she is not given a wild card the Russian will go through an embarrassing qualifying stage to play in the second Grand Slam of the year. She ripped returns for winners, celebrating with a clenched pumped fist. Because Sharapova now is not ranked, she needed a wild card in order to play.

On France 2 television, Macron said the 48-year-old Le Pen would bring disaster to the economy and divide it with "hatred". Melenchon's spokesman Alexis Corbiere said the hard-left firebrand would not endorse anyone.

Sharapova was clearly nervous at the start of her comeback match, firing three forehands long in the first game, double-faulting on her first service game point and being broken by the Italian for a quick 2-0 lead.

After a shaky start and conceding seven of the first eight points, Sharapova settled and showed flashes of her old self.

I was studying, I was working, I was learning, I grew my business, I formed friendships that I didn't ever have the time to form.

Sharapova had another break point in the seventh game but Vinci battled to hold her serve before the Russian levelled things up at 4-4 with her second service game to love.

Meanwhile, Sharapova will find out next month if she can compete at the French Open.

"I feel like in the last 15 months I have really grown as a person and I feel I had to step up and do that".

Her return on a wildcard in Stuttgart has proved divisive with both criticism and support from her fellow players. "I can't control what people say", she said.

Caroline Wozniacki thinks that it is disrespectful to other players, while Roberta Vinci said that a wild card into Stuttgart was not right.
