In his recorded TED Talk shown on Tuesday at TED's global conference in Vancouver, the 80-year-old spoke out about compassion and caring for others, but also used the opportunity to warn arrogant leaders.

TED began in 1984 as a conference focusing on Technology, Entertainment and Design and now covers nearly all topics - from science to business to global issues.

He says that "many of us seem to believe that a happy future is something impossible to achieve".

It was also a brilliant choice, because Pope Francis delivered wise words of warning, reminding us not to forget to consider the repercussions of scientific and technological growth upon our societies and the environment.

Francis in his message said the world "torn by blind violence" needs "courageous people able to learn from the past to build a future without closing themselves up in prejudices", as well as "builders of bridges of peace, dialogue, brotherhood, justice and humanity".

The pope focused on the "you" part by emphasising the need for hope and for human connection, touching on subjects such as immigration and climate change. In April 2013, just a month after Francis was elected pope, the Pontifical Council for Culture co-sponsored a TED Conference at the Vatican on religious freedom.

"Pope Francis is clearly very concerned about the current state of the world", Giussani said.

A proposal to eliminate the estate tax should also be scuttled. The corporate income tax rate would be slashed to 15 percent.

"We have so much to do, and we must do it together".

The video was recorded by a Vatican Television Centre camera crew at the Domus Sanctae Marthae (the guest house in which Francis lives in Vatican City), and marked the first time he has addressed an global conference.

In addition to the 1,800 conference attendees in Vancouver, His Holiness Pope Francis's TED Talk audience also included several thousands of people watching remotely from cinema theaters around the world through the TED Cinema Experience. "If you don't, your power will ruin you and ruin the other", the Pope said.

"The future of humankind isn't exclusively in the hands of politicians, of great leaders, of big companies", he said.

Pope Francis waves at the end of the Easter mass in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican April 16, 2017.

"I, myself, was born in a family of migrants; my father, my grandparents, like many other Italians, left for Argentina and met the fate of those who are left with nothing", he said.

The Gospel of St. Matthew, he said, begins with the birth of Jesus as Emmanuel - "God with us" - and ends with the risen Christ telling his doubtful disciples to go forth and teach all nations, assuring them that "I am with you always, until the end of the age". "Tenderness is not weakness; it is fortitude".
