Google clarifies which Chromebooks will get Android apps

Back in 2016, Google finally began implementing Android app compatibility into Chrome OS and while the list of supported devices was initially quite small, it has grown a ton so far in 2017. Do any of you have much experience with Chrome OS? Performance has not been rated well and its rollout is still pretty dismal.

Google renewed its commitment to running Android apps on Chromebooks earlier this year with the announcement of universal Android app support going forward.

It's good news as the roll out, first mooted a year ago, hasn't exactly rolled out with the speed everyone expected, and while Chromebooks are fine machines, the addition of Android would make for a real rival to Windows.

On the other, Chromebooks with Google Play support on the stable channel are Chromebook R11 (CB5-132T, C738T), Chromebox Mini, Chromebase Mini, Chromebook Flip C100PA, Chromebook Pixel (2015), and Chromebook Plus.

While previously Google had aimed to get Android app compatibility to all Chromebooks released this year and beyond, since then the company has come to the realisation that it "won't be able to bring Android apps to every Chromebook ever made", so there will still be gaps in compatibility. Most of the other Chromebooks are still in the Planned stage. Yes, you'll have more choices than full screen and not full screen.

Moreover, while some devices now feature beta Android app support, a footnote notes that doesn't necessarily mean those same devices will be able to install Play Store apps with the next stable Chrome OS update. In a bid to douse the curiosity, Google has updated its page to show if the list of devices mentioned have Android apps running in the beta channel or stable channel, or are still in the "Planned to receive Google Play" phase.

Notable devices on the list include a variety of Samsung devices like the Chromebook Pro and Chromebook Plus.
