The ProBlkThought Instagram page responded by posting a collage of pictures of attractive black women.
On Kweli's page, several posts featuring photos of the very dark skin women Arenas said weren't lovely, including Nyong'o.
This started when Gilbert commented on a meme encouraging women with more African features (darker complected) to be proud of their beauty, saying he didn't think they had much of it at all. "I thought it was saying, if ur mixed ur not considered black and lovely and my kids are mixed and dark skinned so I perceived it how I wanted to", he wrote on Instagram.
How black are we talking???
Human remains found in Greenwich
Parks employees discovered human remains in Helen Binney Kitchel Natural Park in Old Greenwich on Wednesday. Officers were called to the scene, closed off the area and confirmed that the remains were possibly human.
Social media gathered Arenas real quick and also offered receipts of handsome dark-skinned women. He took this personally because he has mixed children.
"I erased [what I said] to say sorry, but not say sorry because you can't truly blame me for reading it wrong (I went to public school) so I read it how I thought it was written", Arenas wrote. The athlete even slammed actress Lupita Nyong'o as not "cute". I f*cked this up so I deserved the hatred that comes.... "And as for lupita she ain't cute to me sorry...just like I'm not cute to 95% of u..." It's also hard for me to believe Arenas actually misinterpreted the meme. The intent of the message was clearly stated and was posted on a page named "Pro Black Thought". Not once in his original comments did he defend dark-skinned or mixed women.
The message was widely praised by commenters but things took a turn when Arenas wondered how dark is too dark to be considered handsome.
