He is accused of leaving Columbia, Tenn., with the teenager March 13.
(CNN) - Elizabeth Thomas, the Tennessee teenager kidnapped by her teacher, was withdrawn and thinner after she was rescued, family members said Monday.
U.S. District Court Judge Kendall J. Newman ruled Tad E. Cummins is a violent danger to society and a flight risk. "He looks forward to returning to Tennessee as soon as possible to answer the charges against him".
A Tennessee teacher arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and transporting a 15-year-old girl from his school across state lines for sexual purposes is scheduled to make a federal court appearance today in Sacramento. "While the family wants sincerely to keep those who have grown to care for Elizabeth informed, at this time they must ask for privacy as they navigate these very important next few weeks and even months", he said.
They were discovered in a remote cabin in Cecilville, California, after a tipster saw the pair and contacted authorities on Wednesday night, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The girl was apparently healthy and unharmed, and authorities said their main concern was her emotional and mental state.
"The calls and text messages started coming in so fast", Anthony Thomas said of the day Elizabeth was found.

Operating profit also fell to 1.25 trillion won in the first three months, down 6.8 percent from 1.34 trillion won a year earlier. The sudden sales decline came amid intensifying anti-Korean sentiment after Korean government chose to deploy THAAD.
The girl's relative said Cummins knew the girl had been abused and took advantage of that information.
The father told News 2 he's been able to see her several times since then, saying she's relaxing little by little but "you can still tell she's very sensitive to too much going on".
He appeared in court for the first time Monday where a federal magistrate ordered he remain in custody until U.S. Marshals bring him back to Tennessee.
Documents filed in federal court just one day earlier revealed Cummins planned to take his former student to Mexico before venturing to other countries, and may have had the means to do it. In Oklahoma, he bought KY Jelly, a lubricant used for sex, and before leaving Tennessee he refilled a prescription for Cialis, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, showing he meant to have sex with the minor, prosecutors said. The charge carries a minimum of 10 years. "You're speechless", Bozeman said. They were reunited over the weekend, but her sister and father said they have been shying away from details of the teenager's ordeal. "She's just so happy to get food and coffee and showering".
Bozeman also mentioned in the interview that her sister is now in a mental health facility for treatment. "Obviously, we are really trying not to press her, because it's really traumatic for her to remember all of these things", she said.
"He couldn't stand the thought of her being out there alone and him not knowing she was safe", she said.
