He also broke the record as the youngest player to score five Champions League goals in the history of the elite tournament, as Monaco won 3-1 on the night and 6-3 on aggregate.

Monaco opened the scoring through Kylian Mbappe and Radamel Falcao following which Marco Reus pulled a goal back for Dortmund.

The Germany global was dragged off after only 26 minutes as Monaco had attacked freely down his channel and raced into a 2-0 lead through goals by Kylian Mbappe and Radamel Falcao.

Schmelzer and Dembele started on the bench along with Sven Bender as Erik Durm, Raphael Guerreiro and Matthias Ginter all started for the German club, who were looking to overturn a 3-2 first-leg deficit at the Stade Louis II.

'I hope that Mbappe continues with us for a long time and gives us many great nights of football.

Monaco, however, had a golden chance to wrap up their qualification shortly after the hour but Falcao's chip went over the bar.

"Unfortunately we didn't have the quality, energy or the luck to get into the semi-finals".

And hit two in Monaco's 3-2 victory over Dortmund in the last-eight first leg.

The German playmaker was out of action for around a month due to a thigh injury and he took just three minutes to score on his comeback in the 3-1 weekend win over Eintracht Frankfurt. That starts with a hard trip to Lyon on Sunday, followed by a French Cup semifinal against PSG three days later in Paris.
