The Queen's birthday: A life in numbers

Earlier this morning, Buckingham Palace tweeted a picture of the monarch as a baby on her christening day.

In modernising her family's image and refusing to become political, the Queen has held on to the nation's affection.

Born on April 21, 1926, the Queen usually celebrates her birthday twice: on the day of her actual birthday, and in June during an official military parade known as the Trooping of the Colour.

The Queen has had 13 British prime ministers serve during her reign, the first was Winston Churchill. This led the country to observe her recovery from a cold she caught over Christmas anxiously.

Queen Elizabeth herself used to host her birthday on a Thursday in June, but moved it to a Saturday to allow more members of the public to participate. She has now owned more than 30 corgis.
