SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A power outage struck a wide area of San Francisco on Friday, blacking out about 90,000 utility customers, snarling traffic as intersection signals went dark and stopping the famed cable cars for a time.
At Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in the Nob Hill neighborhood, all non-essential appointments and procedures had been canceled, spokeswoman Blair Holloway said.King Lip, chief investment officer at Baker Avenue Asset Management in San Francisco, said his offices had been hit."It's pretty big, seems like half the city has no power".

Pacific Gas & Electric spokesman Barry Anderson says power has been restored to about 23,000 of the 90,000 customers that previously lost power in a massive swath of the central city. Elevators stopped in tall buildings and smoke lingered for hours after San Francisco firefighters quickly extinguished the fire at the downtown substation.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported the outage also affected the Presidio, and KRON-TV reported effects stretched to the Marina/Cow Hollow area. PG&E will replace and upgrade the existing infrastructure to enhance electric reliability and increase capacity to meet future power needs.

As of about 2:30 Pacific (5:30 Eastern Inverse time), a PG&E spokesperson told Inverse the company expected to restore power to the vast majority of its customers by 5 or 6 p.m. The blackout hit at midmorning Friday in th.
The outage includes the Financial District and other areas.
"The real question is how could one substation take out, effectively, San Francisco?".
