Fiji's preparations for its upcoming presidency at this year's UN Climate Chance Conference (COP 23) in Bonn, Germany dominated talks between Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and China's Special Representative of Climate Change Affairs, Xie Zhenhua, at a meeting held in Suva.

The rugby sevens-mad Pacific Island nation made history in claiming gold at last year's Rio Games, the first Olympic medal for the country.

The triumph made the players heroes in their homeland, something no better evidenced than this latest tribute.

While the new coins and banknotes would be limited in supply, RBF Governor Barry Whiteside said the new currency would be issued into circulation today and would carry legal tender status just like any other banknote and coin for paying goods and services. Ryan's face appeared on one side of the commemorative coin.

To make the occasion even more special, former Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan and captain Osea Kolinisau were present among many other guests to witness the historic unveiling.

The two men also discussed possible avenues of Chinese support for Fiji's Presidency, and Bainimarama thanked China for being the first country to provide Fiji with financial support toward its upcoming presidency past year.

In addition he was awarded the Companion of the Order of Fiji, the highest honour in the country.
