United Kingdom parliament clears mid-term 'Brexit poll'

British lawmakers have overwhelmingly approved British Prime Minister Theresa May's plan for an early general election to be held on June 8.

Earlier, under electoral law, May must win a two thirds majority in a parliamentary vote due to be held later on Wednesday before she can officially call an early election.

Earlier, Mr Corbyn dismissed Mrs May's argument that she needs a fresh mandate to deliver Brexit, and said it was "extremely interesting" that she had chosen to call an election as the Crown Prosecution Service prepares to decide whether to press charges against a string of Tory MPs over allegations relating to 2015 general election expenses.

It had been hoped talks could start by the end of that month, but EU Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said Wednesday that "the real political negotiations" with Britain would not start till after the June 8 election.

Nationally, under the divisive leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, the party's stock is seemingly at its lowest since the days of Michael Foot.

With Ms May seen winning a new five-year mandate and boosting her majority in parliament by perhaps 100 seats, the pound held close to six-and-a-half month highs on hopes she may be able to clinch a smoother, more phased departure from the European Union and minimise damage to the United Kingdom economy.

The paper cited polling data from YouGov that suggested the Conservatives were on course to win a majority of 114 House of Commons seats on June 8.

Mrs May has argued a fresh mandate would strengthen her hand in Brexit talks and provide certainty for the future. She has also played up the strength of the British economy, which has so far defied predictions of a slowdown - a key campaign theme that her Conservative Party will use to try to undermine Labour in the election.

Trump told the Journal he and Congress would both have to approve the payments. Republicans put off that task while they were trying to pass Trumpcare.

It was her first face-to-face clash with her main rival for power, Labour's Jeremy Corbyn, since she stunned the country by calling for a snap election on Tuesday. The Lib Dems now have just nine seats in Parliament.

In Bolton, Mrs May said the country now has a "unity of purpose" and a desire for the Government to "get on" with implementing Brexit and "making a success of it". She made an unexpected announcement on Tuesday that she would seek an early election less than halfway through her government's five year-term. It is the fourth round of voting in four years, after the Scotland's independence referendum of 2014, the general election of 2015, and the European Union referendum in 2016.

Schinas and other European Union officials have said they expect draft Brexit guidelines to be adopted by the leaders of the other 27 European Union countries at an April 29 summit.

"The Prime Minister also says this campaign will be about leadership".

Lib Dem leader Tim Farron has refused to rule out a potential resumption of the coalition government that served between 2010 and 2015.

Mr Munro added: "There is a proven track record over two elections and two referendums that debates reach huge audiences including a lot of young people who don't watch conventional political coverage in great numbers".

"The prime minister is not a personality that enjoys this kind of thing", Bartle said.
