The British pound's surge since Prime Minister Theresa May's surprise election call represents an early sign of optimism that the country's exit from the European Union may be smoother than many had feared.

Rejecting the PM's claim that an election is needed to prevent disunity at Westminster undermining a Brexit deal, Mr Corbyn said: "There is no obstacle to the Government negotiating, but, instead of getting on with the job, she is painting herself as the prisoner of the Liberal Democrats".

Virtually all of 330 current Tory MPs voted for an election in less than seven weeks, not surprising given the party is now enjoying a massive lead over Labour in the polls.

Earlier, May said holding an election in June, rather than as scheduled in 2020, would "deliver a more secure future for our country" as it negotiates its departure from the EU.

Parliament is expected to be dissolved on May 3, as British law mandates the dissolution must happen 25 working days before a general election.

May is hoping to gain a bigger majority in Parliament for her Conservatives, strengthening her negotiating hand with the EU. "I will be asking for the British people for a mandate to complete Brexit and make a success of it".

Opinion polls put the Conservatives - who now hold 330 of parliament's 650 seats - well ahead of Labour, who have 229.

The European Union's executive says that Brexit negotiations will start after the snap election in Britain that the prime minister is calling for in June. London triggered article 50 of the Lisbon treaty on March 29 to formally start negotiations on leaving the EU.

Britain is now gearing up for its third general election in seven years, which comes less than a year after the divisive referendum that decided the United Kingdom would withdraw from the EU.

But, while May is trying to focus the election debate on Brexit, Corbyn is looking to harness the powerful anti-establishment mood revealed by the European Union referendum, which has roots stretching back to the 2007-9 financial crisis.

Fifty per cent said they would vote Conservative, 25pc Labour, 11pc Liberal Democrats, 4pc Ukip and 68pc said they would vote the same as they did in the previous election.

Unlike May, her predecessor David Cameron took part in high-profile election debates in 2010 and 2015.

Government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke by phone Tuesday with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who is pressing for an independence referendum, said May was making a "huge political miscalculation" that would bolster her Scottish National Party.
