"We heard one or two gunshots, it wasn't a Kalashnikov, it was shot by shot".
The police union said one of the officers was killed, while the other officer was seriously injured.
Police say the officer who was killed was in a vehicle which had been stopped at a red light by the attacker.
Unconfirmed reports say a gunmen opened fire on police officers on the famous avenue in the west of the city.
Police said there were at least two attackers involved.

The police are said to have been severely injured in gunfire according to French television station BFMTV and another bystander seems also to have been injured.

The shooting comes just two days after police arrested two men in southern Marseille with weapons and explosives, who were suspected of preparing an attack to disrupt the first-round of the presidential election on Sunday.
