However, it has emerged that the USS Carl Vinson and other warships did not sail toward the Korean Peninsula, but went in the opposite direction.

Pence acknowledged gathering "storm clouds" between the USA and North Korea over Pyongyang's continued missile tests and nuclear weapons program.

The Pacific Command statement said the Carl Vinson canceled a scheduled visit to Australia after leaving Singapore on April 8, but completed a shortened training exercise off northwestern Australia before heading north. But it would not arrive until next week at the earliest given the vast distance.

Visiting U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday reiterated the commitment to working with Japan and other countries in the region to bring an end to nuclear and missile issues on the Korean Peninsula.

Addressing some 25-hundred sailors on board the carrier at the U.S. Yokosuka naval base in Tokyo bay, Pence noted the Trump administration will work with allies like Japan and China, . but highlighted readiness is the key.

The American vice president is on a 10-day trip to Asia that has been dominated by the North Korea issue.

Pence underlined this during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Tuesday when he said that "all options are on the table" regarding North Korea.

Aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, the vice president, adopting a Churchillian tone, told troops he was there as "storm clouds gather on the horizon" of Northeast Asia.

Pence told the ship's captain that he had spoken to President Donald Trump, and Trump "wishes he were here".

The stop was part of Mr Pence's Asia tour.
